What is bruxism and what can you do to prevent it? Bruxism is a common yet potentially serious condition caused by unconsciously grinding your teeth together, especially while you sleep. If done often, you can chip or crack your teeth, wear down your tooth enamel, and even cause tooth loss. Unfortunately, avoiding it starts with addressing its symptoms and treating its potential causes.

Bruxism can be painful or cause discomfort in your mouth. This can include earaches, headaches, jaw pain, and tooth sensitivity. With jaw pain comes an increased chance of TMJ disorders in your jaw as the result of bruxism. When you wake up in the morning, check for an increase in jaw pain or irregular tooth sensitivity.

Physical damage to your teeth and gums is often noticeable from bruxism. This can include cheek tissue damage, as well as tongue indentations or irregular chips and cracks with your teeth. If you notice any of these conditions and are unaware of where they came from, they may be the result of bruxism.
